How can I tell if my gums are healthy ?
Healthy gums do not bleed when you brush or floss. Healthy gums are pale pink in general for caucasian patient or light dark for african american, the texture is stippled. When inflamed gums are dark red with a shiny smooth texture. It is essential for the health of your teeth to come back each 6 month for a regular dental cleaning and exam. When a dental cleaning is not performed on a regular basis, calculus builds up and becomes hard to remove with a regular tooth brush or flossing.
How often do I need a dental cleaning ?
In the absence of periodontal disease and pocketing; patients need a dental cleaning each 6 month. In the presence of gums disease Dr Raad will recommend you get a dental cleaning each 3 to 4 month depending on the severity of your condition.
How many times do I need to floss per day ?
The rule of thumb is that you need to clean in between your teeth after every meal. Flossing 3 times a day after every meal is optimal. The most crucial time of the day is prior to sleeping. Never skip brushing and flossing prior to sleeping. During your sleep the oral cavity tends to dry up and the effectiveness of harmful oral bacteria is accentuated in this environment. Keeping food residue on your teeth while asleep is similar to pouring gasoline on a fire.
When should I bring my child for his first cleaning ?
Bringing your child for regular cleanings and exams serves two purposes. The first one is to check for any decay and gum problems. The second and most important reason is to familiarize your child to the dentist office. Your child can come to the office as early as 2 years old. Children cleaning consist of polishing the teeth but the experience itself will help him be less anxious of the dental office.
